Essential

When FromSoftware announced that Elden Ring would receive a major expansion, expectations were sky-high. The base game had already redefined what an open-world action RPG could be, blending the studio's signature punishing combat with a vast, interconnected world co-created with author George R.R. Martin. Shadow of the Erdtree does not merely meet those expectations — it surpasses them in almost every conceivable way.

A New Realm of Darkness

The Land of Shadow is accessed through a late-game area and serves as a self-contained region roughly two-thirds the size of the base game's Limgrave through Altus Plateau combined. It is a place of haunting beauty and relentless danger, filled with crumbling ruins, spectral forests, and underground labyrinths that rival the base game's best dungeon design. The environmental storytelling is exceptional — every corner of the map whispers secrets about Miquella's journey and the ancient civilisation that once thrived here.

Combat Elevated

Shadow of the Erdtree introduces a new progression system through Scadutree Fragments, which provide flat damage and resistance bonuses rather than raw stat increases. This elegant solution means the expansion scales appropriately regardless of your character's level, ensuring that even veteran players will feel the pressure of the new bosses. And those bosses are extraordinary — several rank among the finest FromSoftware has ever designed, demanding pattern recognition, precise timing, and creative use of the new weapons and incantations scattered throughout the region.

New Arsenal

Eight new weapon categories and dozens of individual armaments expand the already staggering build variety of the base game. The Backhand Blade, Dueling Shield, and Great Katana each feel distinct and satisfying, encouraging experimentation. New Spirit Ashes and a handful of powerful incantations round out the additions, ensuring that every playstyle finds something to love.

Pros

  • Stunning, densely designed open world
  • Exceptional boss encounters
  • Elegant new progression system
  • Rich lore and environmental storytelling
  • Diverse new weapons and builds

Cons

  • Requires significant base-game progress to access
  • Some late-expansion areas feel slightly rushed
  • Performance on PC still needs optimisation

Verdict

Shadow of the Erdtree is not just the best expansion FromSoftware has ever produced — it is one of the finest pieces of DLC in gaming history. It demands mastery, rewards curiosity, and delivers an emotional conclusion to Miquella's story that lingers long after the credits roll. If you have any interest in action RPGs, this is essential.
